I had such hopes for this being a good read. The information is there but it is structured in such a haphazard way it’s hard to follow. Thankfully there is an index! I was constantly checking to make sure I was thinking of the right property. Also, much of the history of the tenants of the homes goes way too much in-depth. I wish the author might try again sticking with one property at a time. I would have enjoyed it so much more !
Fantastically sad and interesting just goes to show you have no idea how things got to be the way they are today. Just wish people were bit kinder to each other as well.
Unreal Estate by Michael Gross couldn't compare to 740 Park Ave., although it could have a very interesting account of early Los Angeles history and real estate, it became a complete hodge podge as somehow he included way too much unimportant details, making it all very boring . Gross would have been better concentrating on a smaller area, or also including Malibu what he did include mostly wasn't that interesting except for some for the history about Burton Green's family ( he was one of the founders of Beverly Hills) and the Doheny Family estate at Greystone, although I've a lot about it and seen Greystone many times. He should have had a few key families, a few key houses in the Beverly Hills / Holmly Hills area, and also have had a few houses in Malibu like the very famous Rindge House they were an extremely famous and wealthy family who he left out totally, other wealthy people in downtown LA in the late 1800's early 1900's and Pasadena where there are still some fabulous estates. We've gone on walking tours with the Pasadena Heritage and we've seen many extraordinary estates inside and out. The houses that Gross covered wasn't very interesting it should have been edited to cover certain key houses/ certain key people in BH/ Holmby Hills, Malibu + the Rindge's, downtown LA 100 year ago, and Pasadena . I wasn't impressed with this book, Gross can do better.
like his pieces for NY Magazine in the 90's on supermodels, Gross casts himself as a big game hunter on a safari for beautiful prey, this time square footage beyond compare in Beverly Hills and Beverly Hills adjacent. As with those articles, with subjects so photogenic, it's hard to believe the only photo of note is of the author himself in the inside back of the book jacket. Even the maps which adorn the inside covers don't mark the homes he talks about. He mixes notorious names like Bernie Cornfeld and Heidi Fleiss with familiar ones like Kenny Rogers and George Hamilton. Not sure how he talks about the Pink Palace home of Jayne Mansfield so much without talking about once and maybe current owner Engelbert Humperdinck but that's the problem, he looks for the names he's listed at the front of the book, everyone else is an afterthought, in fact, even some people listed in the book aren't in the index.
enjoyed the book.. at times I found it hard to keep all the names in order.. and who owned what..!
Lacked detail and missed major developments in the high end market. Didn't address the first wave of the tear down craze at all. Disappointing.
