The book is essentially the same version as the 2nd edition with a few pages thrown in by a couple of the author's junior trader/instructors. It still details trade strategies that I have never heard Carter talk about utilizing in any of his daily Youtube uploads over the past 5 years. The entire book is without color, so chart review is a trip back to the 1980's. And, surprisingly, it does not discuss any of his recent Purdy developed indicators, which he sells as "essential to success" trading his approaches to the market. John Carter has exploded his offering of thinkorswim based indicators over the past 3 years, and it was with the expectation that there would be some in depth discussion of these indicators, I purchased the 3rd edition. I would only recommend this book for people brand new to John Carter.
With lots of experience one learns that sometimes only a sentence or two of a new book can render invaluable assistance to one's understanding. As someone who has made more than $500 mil in investment profits for other people, I do know good work when I see it. Just as John F. Carter says himself, one become an expert at using the "squeeze" and trade profitably for a lifetime. Being humble enough to give his employees a share of the limelight speaks well of him.
This book is not about swing stock market trading, there is nothing or very little about it, it's mostly about options and ETFs which I don't trade so it has not usage for me. It's also written in a too-much-sharing-memoir form and there's so much fluff. Some parallels are ridiculous and relatable. You get mugged on the street, would you come back to the street, avoid the street or come back with the taser? The same with the stock market, right? The things that are technical seem unfinished and confusing. For example, it tells you a lot what you shouldn't be doing, but somehow misses to tell you what to do. I assume the idea is to inspire you to purchase a seminar or whatever they are selling. I am bewildered how this book has such a great rating. And on the top of everything, this John F. Carter book has JFC quotations. I have never seen in my life that one book/author is quoting himself/herself in the book as an authority.
I enjoyed the 2nd edition so much that I decided to buy the third edition. It did not disappoint. New sections on psychology , updated charts , new trade setups and some removed and Henry Gamble and Danielle Shay Gum write sections for Mr Carter. These are traders who literally learned to trade from scratch using the techniques taught in the book. They were able to become profitable in short order as well. There is a lot of fluff out there in the financial bookstore world - this book is the real deal. John Carter has probably taught more people to successfully trade than anyone else through his simplertrading.com website.Chris Golden
John Carter's ability to communicate to the reader, both novice and experienced, is the best I've ever encountered. His examples are from actual trades that reoccur all the time, not just once in a lifetime anomaly. He knows when to throw in a little humor and when to be dead serious, so the reader is never bored. The book is so full of information that I doubt any reader can absorb the content in one setting....keep this one for a continual reference on how to trade the markets for a living!
I've being following John and the rest of team at Simpler Trading for a while now (2 years exactly) and I couldn't be more pleased on how simple their methodology is. From simply understanding their mechanics when it comes to options trading and comprehension, to reading the market internals first thing in the morning, to placing and exiting a trade in a timely manner. My goal is to meet the team one day and simply thank them for all that they all do on a daily basis to the masses of retail traders like myself. I would highly recommend John's book Mastering the Trade as he shares timeless information that truly is worth every penny for any beginner, intermediate and advanced traders. Market internals are truly an eye popper! And to Simpler Trading, keep up the good work!
Good book but the paper it’s printed on does not seem to be incredibly durable.
This book is amazing !!! Out of the dozens of market books I have read, this book has been the only one that has trading strategies I can put to use to make money consistently. I’ve bought several other copies to give to family members , that’s how much it impacted me.
