Ruth Bader Ginsburg was the second woman appointed to the supreme court. This is a summary of her collected writings and speeches.1- Ruth Bader Ginsburg was inspired by women and Jews who blazed a trail in the legal profession. She calls them "waypavers".2- She was supported by both parties in her nomination to the Supreme Court.3- People need to work together to maintain an efficient, respected legal system. She is proud of the fact so many decisions are unanimous and dislikes protests against the established order. Ginburg's work in establishing those rights as interpreted by the court paved the way to LGBT rights, including the Obergefell v. Hodges ruling overturning state bans on gay marriages. She has been a powerful force for equality.5- Cases filed by men claiming gender discrimination, such as Moritz v Commissioner, paved the way for laws prohibiting such.6- The judicial system is well served by a prudent use of dissenting opinions. The most notable was the 1856 Dred Scott decision in which the dissenting opinion written by Judge Curtis argued that, counter to the court's decision, he held that black people could be U.S. citizens. This is typically done with respect and devoid of rancour, in part because these are the respectable justices of the Supreme Court, and in part to keep from undermining the authority and reputation of the court and the legal system.7- Foreign law is a useful reference for US law. Indeed the US absorbed much of England's common law at its founding. Using foreign law can help clarify thinking and raise concerns or ideas that might otherwise be overlooked.8- Ginsburg loves opera, as did Scalia, and apparently she was the conservative there, while he was more progressive. This was a shared passion that united them.This one of those required reads for a well-read adult that does well enough in summary, and this summary is more than sufficient. I found it impressively comprehensive and entertaining.I received an advanced readers copy of this book.
