I had no intention of buying this book until one evening in July my wife spotted something strange in her vegetable garden (in Akron, Ohio). Yes it was a juvenile green iguana that I managed to capture about an hour later. I was unable to find a local rescue society and did not want to give it to a pet store because we thought someone tossed it out and we did not want to have it sold to a like minded person. Several hundred dollars later the iguana, JJ, is living in my apartment. I can only join in the many other reviews that highly recommend this book. It has everything you need to know about keeping iguanas including great advice on the "Ultimate Substrate" that I am using now. Combined with information from the Green Iguana Society I can't imagine that any question about pet iguanas would go unanswered. Just as important it shows these animals as having the potential to become friendly and endearing pets with a real personality. So if you are thinking about getting an iguana read this book, preferably before you acquire one.
For all the iguana owners searching the web for care manuals, look no further. I know you may be thinking, I'd rather buy a less expensive guide because those were my thoughts exactly. After reading a dinky 70 pager, however, I still had many questions left unanswered. I wish I had just bought The Green Iguana from the get-go not only for financial reasons, but more importantly because my iguana would have benefited behaviorally and physically if I initially had the knowledge inside. I have been an iguana enthusiast since youth and now 15 years later, the book is still shedding light on how to improve my Luigi's health and happiness. From a food-pyramid, health troubleshooting, to environment/mental stimulation tips, Hatfield covers it all! Plus, the index is very comprehensive, the quotes show you real-life testimonials on what to do and not to do as an iguana owner, and the author makes available his direct advice on your iguana issues by disclosing his address in the back of the book. Upon finishing veterinarian school, I will without a doubt recommend this invaluable resource to all my clients to ensure their pet lives up to the personable, inquisitive, and cat-like (mine follows laser beams) personality of the domestic iguana.
If you have never owned an Iguana or have very little knowledge of the massive care they need, this book is a must! Mr. Hatfield, has done extensive research and put together a plethora of knowledge that a layman could understand. Iguana's require special strict captive requirements as lighting, humidity, diet, thermal zones, cages with large climbing areas and much more. You will gain the knowledge to make educated decisions, monitor your Iguana's condition and provide the best husbandry possible.
Given the size of this book, one would have expected a comprehensive overview of the biology of green igauanas along with their care as pets. But the book is too anecdotal in its content, and so important topics are treated in a cursory fashion, especially the discussion on diseases and ailments of green igaunas. I have lost two iganuas because of black spot, but the author does not give a useful discussion of the origins and cures for black spot. The book is not without its virtues though, and some of the more interesting discussions include: 1. The scientific classification for iguanas. 2. How to differentiate betweeen the sexes. 3. The ability of iguanas to detect ultraviolet light. 4. An explanation os to why iguanas close their eye when an object is brought close to it. 5. The existence of a parietal eyes on iguanas, a fact that took me completely by surprise. The functioning of this eye is apparantly to act as a sensor for sunlight, enabling the iguana to move to the shade and avoid overheating. 6. The internal anatomy of iguanas. 7. The existence of a Jacobson's organ. 8. The importance of heat for adequate digestion. 9. The entire chapter on the feeding of iguanas. 10. The presence of salmonella in iguana feces. This has been reported in the press as a concern for iguana owners, particularly pregnant women. 11. The plans for the construction of an iguana habitat. With more in-depth discussion on important topics, and with the omission of anecdotal insertions, this book would become the bible of iguana care and biology. The author is quite correct when he asserts that iguanas are difficult to take care of. That is why he needs to spend more time on treating the topics in more depth.

Consider this the ninteenth straight five-star rating. Our green iguana was a gift from a well-intentioned, but uninformed, relative. We had no clue how extensive little Gherkin's care would be. If you are considering giving, or receiving, a green iguana, please, for the sake of it's health, read this book first. We've spent over $10k and coutless hours in five years, and now have a big, healthy, friendly iguana, but if I had the choice (and this book in advance) I would not want to go through it all again, and you might not want to either. If you already have an iguana and want to provide it with the best care, get this book.
This is the best & most comprehensive book on Ig care I have ever had the pleasure of reading. I would recommend it as required reading for any Iguana owner; or even better, anyone considering getting one of these complicated & challenging creatures as a pet, so you can know what you're getting into!
