One podcast I really enjoy is 372 Pages We'll Never Get Back, hosted by Michael J. Nelson and Conor Lastowka, in which the hosts read a book that they expect they will not like. I decided to read along this time. What a mistake. This is the worst book I have ever read. The book stars Titus Uno, Certified Public Accountant, Forensic Certified Public Accountant, and Chartered Global Management Accountant (and every time he mentions his name he includes ALL of those titles). He is investigation a crime committed by the "cat burglar terrorist" who blew up the 64-SQUARES building. The first 16 chapters of the book serve as introductions to every character in the book and are full of extraneous and boring information as well as pointless repetition (seriously I don't need to be told that CEO stands for Chief Executive Officer every time the CEO's name is mentioned). The next five chapters consist of us being told at length and again with much repetition and extraneous detail what information needs to be discovered to solve the case. Then the next chapter is the court trial, which contains the only action taken by the protagonist throughout the whole book--giving a one paragraph statement during the trial--as well as a brief summary of the people involved in the crime, which makes no sense. Then the final chapter gives a summation of the book and explains the motives of the crime in greater detail though not enough detail to really make sense.Essentially, this is a mystery in which the main character does almost nothing, almost nothing happens, and nothing is really explained very well.
Imagine there was a three page book outline. No details, no setting, no flavor, just who is going to talk to who and vaguely about what. Now maybe there are a few character back stories thrown in...nothing huge, just past events and family members. Now instead of writing this book, working out the characterization, plot, dialogues and whatever else, write one boring chapter that tells the audience that these things are happening rather than actually depicting them.Don't get detailed. DO NOT GET DETAILED.Now, copy-paste this chapter and changed the names for each person the main character talks to, being exquisitely careful not to give the reader ANY information what-so-ever on what was discussed. When in doubt, copy paste more.Add a few references to chess, music, accounting and private eye stuff. Don't actually have any of these characters do any of these activities in the narrative, just say that they like them or do them.I am convinced this is the writing process behind this book.Book still too short? Have the protagonist of the first person voice book state his full name and title where most people would say "I" . This turns one letter into 15 words.Need to pad it out more? No problem, just reuse your previous chapters. Make most of chapters 8-11 identical. Only people who make it most of the way through will notice that chapters 12-21 all end in EXACTLY THE SAME 50 word sentence. (It also ends chapters 8-11, but with three words different)Full disclosure: I bought this because 372 pages podcast was reading it. That being the case, I honestly wouldn't have minded so much if this book was just bad with an honest effort, but this is bad and LAZY.
I've been following along with the books read by Conor Lastowka and Michael J. Nelson for the "372 Pages We'll Never Get Back" podcast. The books before this one seemed to be books where the author was attempting to write a story and it just didn't turn out to be very good. This book is on a very different level of bad. They addressed it just a bit in one of the podcast episodes, but as I was reading I seriously wondered if we were reading the works of someone who had never read a book before (???). Its a book version of the first episode of a season of American Idol where people show up who obviously have never been told that they can't sing. This guy hasn't been told that he knows nothing of how books are written (I assume??). It's shockingly bad writing.Another possibility is that this is just inept padding to make a very limited amount of ideas and words get to a reasonable book length and that this isn't a serious attempt at writing a book at all.Anyway, I didn't have the same enjoyment of this book that Conor and Mike did. It was a real slog to get through, and had me scratching my head wondering what this thing even was. Barring a follow-along with the 372 pages podcast, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK.
I won this on Amazon Giveaway, so it cost me nothing. I still feel like I was overcharged. The misspellings, sentence structure and run-on sentences make this read like a bad middle school paper. Also, the lead character, Titus Uno, Certified Public Accountant, Forensic Certified Public Accountant, and Chartered Global Management Accountant, is introduced...just that way...repeatedly. Here's an example:"Before starting so, however, I, Titus Uno, Certified Public Accountant, Forensic Certified Public Accountant, and Chartered Global Management Accountant, will have to get a soft-drink poured into a glass because I am thirsty and food in my stomach because I am hungry. It was a long and lonesome journey be home. I, Titus Uno, Certified Public Accountant, Forensic Certified Public Accountant, and Chartered Global Management Accountant, have solved many interesting cases in the past, but I have waited years for a case like this international case."I finished the first chapter and felt like I had been reading this book for months. That was as far as I could get. My recommendation to the author: If you're going to self-publish, at least hire a good editor. My recommendation to the reader: Just say no...
