The Beekeeper’s Promise is a WW2 novel by Fiona Valpy. Although the story is fiction, some of the places are real and the stories of the Resistance are real as is the massacre in Tulle. The story could easily have taken place and maybe it did in some country and small town. Fiona Valpy tells the story of Elaine and her family during the War and the story of Abi in the present time trying to recover from a car accident and an abusive marriage. The story is told in alternating chapters by Elaine from 1938 to 1944 and then the present 2017. Abi’s story is told all in 2017. This technique works wonderfully for this story. It keeps both stories going and combines the stories at the same time. Abi has many lessons to learn from the stories Sara Cortini tells her about Elaine and her family during WW2. She also learns many lessons from working for Sara and her husband for the summer. The book is absolutely wonderful and easy to read. You must have tissues close at hand and plenty of time to read without interruptions.
When I finally got my head sorted around the two main characters, Elaine and Abi and the connection between the two of them living in rural France at the Château Bellevue, I found it much easier to flip my attention between each of their story timelines, Elaine in the 1940's during WW11 and Abi in 2017. I found I became very 'involved' with Elaine's story (which we find out later, was also being told to Abi by the current owner of the Chateau). What I was not prepared for, were the floods of tears I had during some of the harrowing tales of the Nazi's treatment of the villages and the people that surrounded the Chateau! And my 'heart was in my mouth' with Elaine's assistance to the partisan's. (I'm not a tearful person normally! But there are some books and stories that hold you, shake you in both laughter and tears .. and this one did it for me! Though not much to laugh at in this one, apart from the ending - laughing with relief!). Of course, there are the love relationships interwoven throughout the book, and not all predictable either! I had already read Fiona Valpy's book 'Sea of Memories', which I also 'lost myself in' and this one did not disappoint, and the ending of this book was both satisfying and surprising.
Unlike many other stories which juxtapose events in two different time periods, this story rings true and illuminates the spirit of the French people during the German Occupation in World War II. I was fascinated from s tart to finish with the comparison between Eliane of the 1940s and Abi from the 21st century. The two time periods are separately described in detail without confusion for the reader. Bonne journee.
Having read reviews of this book I opted to buy it and was not disapointed in the story what so ever. While enjoying the story line of the bee's I found the information regarding the German occupation of France very enlightening as it is a subject often ignored. Further it was interesting to learn of the hardships experienced by the general population in a rural area.
I have read so many fiction and nonfiction accounts of World War II, and I can’t seem to learn enough about the bravery of people throughout Europe who endured the horrors thrust upon them. This account of the occupation of a small French village had the added interest of the current-day struggle Abi juxtaposed with the wartime struggle and bravery of Eliane. That would have been enough for me, but the bonus was the beautiful storytelling that almost provided a sensory overload at times with the rich images. This book was a delight from start to finish.
I did finish the book but found far too many repeated comments regarding the water and the scenery. Plus Abi's problems and her bad marriage was too drawn out. . Parts were exciting but many chapters were simply boring. For some reason the author never built up the tension and even the feelings Elaine felt seemed strange, jumping from one love to another.
i've always been interested in this period of time, and i like a story written from a woman's perspective: how a woman was able to survive during the horrors of wwii. i went into this story knowing little to nothing of the french involvement in the war, other than what could be gleaned from the movie Casablanca (LOL). This story revolved around the life and family of a young woman in a small rural town. i enjoyed the writing and the story so much that i have already bought another book by the same author.
This book takes place in the present (2017) and during WWII in France. The story of the French people who helped with the resistance was very good and held my interest. The alternating chapters were the present day ...the modern character (Abi) is visiting France where the war story took place...and she hears the war time story almost as we are reading it. Abi's life does not, in any way, parallel what the French had to live through. But the writer wants us to think Abi's lousy marriage teaches her the same lessons - staying true to self. The idea was too contrived and made what could've been a good book into one I could never recommend.
