Okay. This book started off with promises. Some were fulfilled and the others were not. Too many unanswered questions and maybe a cliffhanger. There was no funny parts at all. Just dark and depressing. Read at your own risk. Hopefully there will be more character development in next book.
I thought the book was lame, the plot was unbelievable, the prehistoric creatures were not the least bit believable. Before I even finished the book (and I actually DID finish it) I knew I will not read anything else written by S.T. Carledge.
What I know of Shane Cartledge’s writing generally lies within surreal and dreamy bizarro ala Day of the Milkman and House Hunter. His story “Wizard and Robot in the Land of Sand and Bonesâ€â€‹â€‹ from The Four Gentlemen of the Apocalypse is one of the most memorable I have read. Kaiju Canyon throws a curve with the author writing more traditional book of terror, with a lost group of campers and giant prehistoric creatures awakening from within the earth. Biomega and Thornelius Rex are formidable and frightening monsters, each with an army of their own as they clash against each other, menacing the characters in the story. The scenes are descriptive and paint a graphic picture of the impending chaos. While this is a shorter piece, the ending did wrap things up a bit too quickly for me. That considered, I enjoyed seeing another side of Cartledge, and look for what he pulls out of his head next.
A fan of big monster movies, I picked up this book without hesitation, and neither was I disappointed. Set in the present day in the Australian Outback, a rogue cop from the big cities smells trouble when a hunting party goes missing. Rather than waiting for the local constabulary to get the ball rolling, he sets out with the chief of police's daughter (a friend of many of the missing persons in the hunting party). What they discover along the way is a hellish landscape of a lost world complete with living relics from a time when the Earth was a much different place.Mr. Cartledge's prose paints a grim, dark setting. Realistic in tone, it shares the disaster that might befall humans caught in such a situation. Fantasy as it may be, it acknowledges the deep roots of the originator of kaiju films from the 60s and 70s... Godzilla (1954). This isn't camp, it's horror!
Being that this is the first book I've read from S.T. Cartledge i was quite humoured and entertained. I recommended giving it a read if you like monsters and horror in your reads! The book takes you on a grim adventure when a group on a hunting expedition go missing, only to be searched for by an even smaller group consisting of police and a close friend of theirs. What lies ahead for the search party party is no fairy tale ending, but a shock of reality where the decisions they make could inflict on them and others, making it their last.I had trouble putting the book down, the scenery and descriptive language was great as i imagined an outback desert in australia with a canyon inside it. Monsters crawling around and doing what they do best...The story pulled you in hoping for the greater good, but inwardly you knew that there was no good ending. As for the end itself, i felt it wasn't enough and needed more (just cause it was good in general) but also because it felt like a quick ending that could have been expanded on. The novella was great otherwise and im glad i had read it.I'm looking forward to reading Cartledges' next book and whatever wacky adventure he creates !All the best!
This one starts out with a solid punch, and keeps slamming fists until the finish. It reminds me of some of the grittier old giant monster films that didn't get overly science fiction, silly, or weird. Concentrates well on action, big monsters eating people, and everything else it should. Solid all around.
An excellent, short, summer read. It's full of blood and thunder and big lizards - what's not to like about that? Perfect beach read, in the vein of Valley of Gawagi or other 50's B monster movies. So if you like your lizards big, spiky and fire breathing check this little number out.
