I guess I should have done more research before buying this book, because I wound up being pretty disappointed. I've used and enjoyed Rick Steves' guides before, so when I wanted a travel guide covering England, I didn't hesitate to order this one. At a glance, one assumes it will cover - at least in part - all of the major tourist destinations/cities/regions. Unfortunately, this is not the case. A quick glance at the index reveals a single page for the city of Oxford. The listing? 'Oxford: Harry Potter sights'. That's it. It seems Mr. Steves prefers Cambridge, which gets an entire section devoted to it. That's fine, of course, but we happen to want to visit Oxford in our travels (too many years of watching the adventures of Inspectors Morse and Lewis), and to do so, we'll have to buy another book.Similarly, a whopping 48 pages are devoted to North Wales, while South Wales gets only 19 - 11 of them about Cardiff. Want to visit Manchester or Bristol? Cornwall, Devon, or the East Midlands? Sorry, these places don't exist in this book. The Keswick Pencil Museum? It's your lucky day!I'm not criticizing the way Steves tours or writes (Pencil Museum, though?!). But really, could you not just call it, 'Rick Steves' Best of Great Britain' and include a bit on the back cover about it only covering certain places? At least then I'd know to buy more than one guide for our trip.
In the areas covered by Rick's book, he is spot on. However, there are several areas of GB that he completely ignores for reasons of his own. The area in and around Aberdeen, Scotland is one key example. Aberdeen is a wonderful city, full of historic and cultural treasures, and voted one of the most liveable cities in the world. It is relatively cheap, clean, and easy to get to. He harps on Bath, which has created a touristy, expensive, crowded nightmare. Some of his recommended B&Bs had raised their prices substantially since they got a mention, so beware of the "Rick Steve's effect" before deciding to visit or book a reservation.
I am a big fan of Rick Steves' travel books and use them where ever I go. I purchased this book for a possible future trip (and to fulfil the free shipping requirement). When the book came, I was so excited that I started planning my virtual trip. One of my coworkers told me about his website. There is more updated information on the site than in the book. When abroad without internet service, the book would be great. While in the US, I will be doing my Rick Steves' research via his website.
The usual Rick Steves' thoroughness in providing information like whether to buy or not buy rail passes, for example.A bit to my surprise, a town like Chester in England is not included in the Table of Contents. For those of us of geriatric persuasion, a town like Chester might be visited on our tour by train or bus. Car travel is now out of the question for us, particularly on the "wrong" side of the road.All in all, this book lives up to the reputation of 'always thinking of the traveller' which we have found in other Rick Steves guides.
I am disappointed it did not cover Cornwall and Devon. It was not clear when I ordered that those areas were not included in the book. I WOULD NOT order it again.
Great tips. I disassembled the book so I could pack the parts of the UK i was going to travel...and even brought the book cover as some folks give a discount on bringing the Rick Steve's book with you.Why only four stars? Some prices were pretty far off, and it made some prtty wild assumptions on how much I would be willing to pay to travel certain public transport to get from one part of the UK to the other. Some were really expensive options I found much cheaper options when I got there. Hint: Megabus for the win
We are planning a trip and this book contains enormously valuable information. Rick gives details down to how many days/nights needed to see the best spots in various locations throughout GB. I love that there are recommendations on B&Bs and other places to stay, which I didn't see in other books. He gives directions for drivers as well as those who want to use trains and buses with holiday information and notation of days where service is reduced or perhaps non-existent. Fantastic book!
This is a decent guide to the highlights of Great Britain. I have used many of Rick Steves' other travel books before and find them to be a great asset in helping to plan a trip of any length. He gives example itineraries of what to see and do in each city depending on the amount of time you may spend there.It does not, however seem to cover very much on things like the Warner Bros Harry Potter Studio Tour outside London or the Doctor Who Experience in Cardiff (or much of Cardiff in general). If you're hoping to get a complete view of Great Britain, including Wales and Northern Ireland, there are other guides.The best part of his guides is how well they are read on a Kindle. Other guides don't look all that great on the Kindle eReader or on the Kindle app on my phone, but this one is very easy to navigate.
