The book is now 15 years old, which means the stories are 15+ years old and the descriptions of the parts of an F1 car are simplistic, apparently aimed at someone new to the sport and mechanics, but the writing is fresh and breezy and it's an easy read (at the end he describes how the book nearly writes itself, which is entirely believable). For structure and page filling, he uses a fictional plane trip with chatter about New York and Paris and the Concorde, none of which contribute to understanding an F1 car but are somewhat entertaining. I bought the book because I think Steve Matchett is the best race commentator on TV, so despite its lack of content, it's interesting to spend this time with him.
Those who enjoy watching F1 in North America will be familiar with Steve Matchett's voice. It's hard to not read this book, in fact, and hear his ebullient self coming through. Steve Matchett loves cars. He loves cars, racing, and the people behind it all. This book is limited in scope to the design considerations of an F1 car in the early 'oughts'--it was published in 2004 and in his head, of course, for likely far longer than that. If you want a basic primer on F1 design, this is a great place to start.Matchett's prose is workmanlike, and if there is any flaw that needles the reader, I'd say it's occasionally that the book's conceit--that he had an extended conversation on the book's thesis and contents with a single small group over the course of a long-delayed flight--wears thin after a while.Nonetheless, this book is well worth your time as a basic primer to the competing demands racing engineers must satisfy in order to get their chariot on the podium. I'm very happy to have read it and came away more knowledgeable.
Steve Matchett is a former Formula One mechanic who has become a successful writer and currently is a commentator for Speed TV and ESPN. In this book, Matchett weaves a tale set in an airport bar, where he and a few others wait for hours and hours for a delayed trans-Atlantic flight. To past the time they discuss what would make up an idea F1 car and team. However, the book is actually much better than this rather tissue-thin back story would suggest, although Matchett swears that the events he uses in the back story did happen, although he did alter the time sequencing and people.Once you get past the setup, most of the rest of the book is an enjoyable discussion of Formula One technology, construction techniques and race craft. Matchett does touch upon the historic background of many of the subjects, but mostly he deals with the modern era. His style is informative without being too wrapped up in techno-speak. And, just as if he was conversing with a group of people, there are questions asked by his fellow would-be passengers that allow Matchett to explain and illustrate points so that the layman could comprehend them.I would recommend this book to anyone who likes racing, has an interest in F1 and would like to find out more about it without having to delve into much more technical books. As is always true in F1, as soon as a book is published the information in is becomes out of date, but enough of the currently technology of F1 has been around since before Matchett wrote this book that it does have relevance to the current racing season. And Matchett is a good writer, dubious back story or not.
I gave this book 3 out of 5 stars because this Kindle version is missing the photos that are included in the printed version of this book. I have the printed version with the pictures and it makes a big difference when you are trying to understand what the author is writing about. I talked to an Amazon rep. to see if she could send a message up to the Amazon HQ policymakers and see if they'll give my feedback some consideration and change their policy on what they'll accept form the publishers, before they do a Kindle e-book. Hopefully, down the road they'll rectify this quality issue soon, so many more customers won't get shorted or ripped off. I also let them know that there needs to be a clearly visible warning so you'll know what your buying and won't expect something that you are not getting after purchase. Otherwise, I haven't had many issues since I started shopping with Amazon in 2007.
This is the most amazing of Matchett's book I have read so far. Steve writes as if he is sitting next to you with a pint. He knows F1 very well and communicates better than anyone I have read yet about racing. I have followed F1 for more than 50 years, so I love the sport and now know way more about the cars (and the Concorde).
I bought this book to learn more about the technology behind F1 cars, not drivers or politics. What I took away from this book is a huge appreciation for how incredibly intricate, scientific, and artful are the design of F1 cars. Matchett takes the car apart piece by piece and shows its evolution through the sport, and what impact each change has and how all parts are interconnected. Inevitably, there is the history of the teams as Matchett describes the innovations each team brought to the sport.I have a basic knowledge of cars, and I followed the majority of this book easily. However, I got the impression that even a learned mechanic will enjoy the insights this books offers.The only con is that this book is now 10 years old... so keep in mind that where the book leaves off is certainly not the current state of F1. But it will give you an excellent understanding of where the sport has come from, and why things are the way they are today.
